What Is Domain Transfer and When Is It Used?

What Is a Domain Transfer?

A domain transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one registrar to another.

This process does not change domain ownership. It only changes the company that manages the domain registration.

When Is a Domain Transfer Needed?

Domain transfers are commonly performed for the following reasons:

  • Switching to a registrar with better pricing
  • Managing all domains under a single account
  • Receiving better support or service quality
  • Changing domain management provider

Domain Transfer vs DNS Change

Domain transfer is often confused with DNS changes.

  • Domain transfer: Changes the registrar.
  • DNS change: Updates where the domain points.

Changing DNS does not mean the domain has been transferred.

How Does Domain Transfer Work?

The general steps of a domain transfer include:

  • Unlocking the domain
  • Obtaining the authorization (EPP/Auth) code
  • Initiating the transfer at the new registrar
  • Approving the transfer request

How Long Does a Domain Transfer Take?

Transfer duration depends on the domain extension. Most transfers complete within 1 to 7 days.

After completion, the domain registration period is usually extended by one year.

When Is Domain Transfer Not Possible?

Some conditions may prevent a domain transfer:

  • Domain registered within the last 60 days
  • Recently transferred domains
  • Domain lock enabled
  • Invalid authorization code

From a knowledge base perspective, improper domain transfer planning can cause downtime and access issues.
